Is there anyone out there that doesn’t love these posters by Alex Varanese? Maybe it has a lot to do with growing up in the 80′s but I find these Ironic and Brilliant! You see in the 80′s most of us were promised flying cars, jetpacks, and a Jetson-esque lifestyle by the year 2000. It really seemed that far into the future. Yeah, we have gadgets that are more resolute, faster, and smaller than ever, and you can’t forget computers without keyboards, but it’s not quite as cool as a flying car would be…

What would you do if you could travel back in time? Assassinate Marilyn Monroe? Go on a date with Hitler? Obviously. But here’s what I’d do after that: grab all the modern technology I could find, take it to the late 70′s, superficially redesign it all to blend in, start a consumer electronics company to unleash it upon the world, then sit back as I rake in billions, trillions, or even millions of dollars.

I’ve explored that idea in this series by re-imagining four common products from 2010 as if they were designed in 1977: an mp3 player, a laptop, a mobile phone and a handheld video game system. I then created a series of fictitious but stylistically accurate print ads to market them, as well as a handful of abstract posters (you know, just for funsies).

I’ve learned that there is no greater design element than the anachronism. I’ve learned that the strongest contrast isn’t spatial or tonal but historical. I’ve learned that there’s retro, and then there’s time travel.

The irony is that all post-modern, smugly self-referential retro visuals aside, I’d gladly trade in my immaculately designed 21st century gadgets for these hideously clunky, faux-wood-paneled pieces of über-kitsch. Sorry, Apple.

My Dad used to take my brother and I to the bicycle trade shows so he could check out all the latest gear for his road bike. BORING!!! (at the time,) so we found ourselves walking the halls to get as many free BMX decals and SWAG as we possibly could! At least until the Freestyle Team exhibition would start up; Bunny hops over multiple persons, Endo’s for days, Bar Spins, and One wheeled tricks. Which of course we would do our best to mimic the next day at home. I still dream of the days when life was simple, hanging outside with friends, and riding our BMX down to 7 Eleven to get a slurpy, or going to the track to see if we could make it over those jumps!

I just got a huge rush of adrenaline when Bob Haro sent us this press release and had to share about the IKONIX limited edition 30th Anniversary BMX Freestyle bike. If you are like me this means a lot. Ride on…

Rarely do I sip my own kool-aid on this blog, but I couldn’t pass it up. I was stoked to have the chance to collab with Grenade Gloves and Pac Sun!

First, It’s really easy to make good t-shirt designs when you have access to great logos. I started by printing them out and went to work. What you see below came from folding, tearing, scratching, scribbling and photocopying the Grenade logo and typestyle at my local Staples. When all of that was done, I really didn’t need a computer at all but to add some texture and better positioning of elements in Adobe Photoshop. To make it screen print ready all i needed to do was quick trace it in Adobe Illustrator and choose my color ways.
