BOB HARO, THE FATHER OF FREESTYLE BMX

My Dad used to take my brother and I to the bicycle trade shows so he could check out all the latest gear for his road bike. BORING!!! (at the time,) so we found ourselves walking the halls to get as many free BMX decals and SWAG as we possibly could! At least until the Freestyle Team exhibition would start up; Bunny hops over multiple persons, Endo’s for days, Bar  Spins, and One wheeled tricks. Which of course we would do our best to mimic the next day at home. I still dream of the days when life was simple, hanging outside with friends, and riding our BMX down to 7 Eleven to get a slurpy, or going to the track to see if we could make it over those jumps!

I just got a huge rush of adrenaline when Bob Haro sent us this press release and had to share about the IKONIX limited edition 30th Anniversary BMX Freestyle bike. If you are like me this means a lot. Ride on…

Bob Haro Celebrates 30 Years of BMX with IKONIX Limited Edition Freestyle Bike Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA, (March 30, 2012) – Bob Haro, known as the “Father of Freestyle”, is paying tribute to the sport he pioneered with his new IKONIX limited edition 30th Anniversary BMX Freestyle bike. Drawing on a legacy of design and performance, these bikes will be the ultimate tribute to thirty years of BMX freestyle innovation and style with only 540 premium-crafted bikes being produced for release in summer 2012. “2012 marks three decades since I created the first bike for freestyle riding. I’m still a BMXer at heart, so I am proud and amazed by where other riders have taken it over the years,” said Bob Haro. “From the days of Eddie Fiola and Mat Hoffman to current phenoms like Dennis Enarson and Nigel Sylvester, what an incredible experience to see what was once considered a rogue sport when I was a kid now be embraced as a legitimate and exhilarating sport by the X Games, Dew Tour, and millions of riders and fans around the world.”

Since his early days in BMX, Bob Haro has been naturally drawn to the action sports lifestyle as a rider, designer, and artist. Whether leading the first freestyle brand or as a stunt rider in the now infamous BMX chase scene in Steven Spielberg’s production of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Bob has inspired millions to ride everyday and explore the next level of possible. As an artist and designer, Bob’s influence is still seen with such work as collaborations with Nike to design the uniforms for the US Olympic BMX racing teams, and his artwork featured in various projects and exhibitions.
